Bugleweed
Ajuga

Description:  A rapid growing ground cover with upright flowers blooming April through May.  Spread vigorously and is thus recommended for filling large areas like banks and hillsides.  It also makes a great underplanting for a number of Hosta varieties.  Grows best in partial to full shade but will also grow in full sun if moisture is constant.  Ajuga will spread rapidly so it is best used as a ground cover on a slop or under a tree.  Do not use it as an edging for the lawn; it will easily spread into the grass.

Growth Rate: Fast
Soil Preference: Will grow in moist, well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils.  Prefers a pH of acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full shade, partial shade, full sun (must provide moisture if planted in full sun)
Attributes: Deer resistant, attracts birds, attracts butterflies, ground cover, naturalizing
Pests: Aphids
Diseases: Mildew, Stem Rot, Cucumber mosaic virus
Good Companion Plants: Astilbe, Blue Mist Shrub, Heartleaf Brunnera, Coral Bells, Corydalis, Forget-Me-Nots, Hardy Gearnium, Hosta, Dwarf Iris, Violas
Care: Deadhead after blooming and divide plants in fall or spring. to keep them within their bounds.  Fertilize with Plant-tone, or a water-soluble fertilizer.

Ajuga 'Black Scallop' (reptans group)

Description: This attractive small-scale groundcover has glossy, near-black, scalloped leaves and a dense habit. The deepest foliage color is achieved when plants are sited in full sun and in cooler temperatures. From mid to late spring, short (4-6") spikes of deep blue flowers stand upright above the low, spreading foliage. The effect is stunning when planted en masse.  'Black Scallop' tends to spread more slowly and stay naturally compact compared to other kinds of Ajuga, making it suitable for use as an edging. It also fits nicely into rock gardens and mixed container plantings. It is reported to be resistant to powdery mildew.

Ajuga 'Burgundy Glow' (reptans)

Description: Tricolor foliage borne in shades of creamy-white, rose-burgundy, and dark green. The leaves turn a deep bronze in fall. Short spikes of blue flowers stand upright above the low, spreading foliage in early spring. This variety tends to spread more slowly than others.

Ajuga 'Catlin's Giant' (reptans)

Description:  6" long purple and green leaves with 8" tall blue flower spikes in early spring. 'Catlin's Giant' tends to be a clumper until it gets established. Will grow in the shade of large trees where grass is hard to establish.

Description:  This unusual variety has rich chocolate and green leaves that are relatively small and narrow. Its small size makes it perfect for planting between stepping stones or in wall crevices. Short spikes of blue flowers stand above the low growing foliage in early spring.

Description:  An elegant and restrained selection of Ajuga forming a neat carpet of rounded leaves splashed with creamy yellow and celadon green, becoming infused with rose tones in cooler weather.  Short spikes of blue flowers appear in mid to late spring.  Spreads more slowly then other Ajugas.
