Description:

These are colorful North American natives with bright, Foxglove like flowers in summer.  They all appreciate full sun and well-drained soil and once established, they will all tolerate some dryness.   Cut spent blooms to encourage a second blooming. 

 

Common Name: Beard Tongue, Bearded Tongue
Botanical Name: Penstemon
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Will grow in dry to moist soils.  Suitable soil is well-drained or sandy.  The pH preference is acidic to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade
Attributes: Attracts birds, attracts butterflies, suitable for cut flowers.
Pests: Nematodes, vine weevil, aphids and spider mites.
Diseases: Powdery mildew, root rot
Good Companion Plants: Delphinium, Hardy Geranium, Garden Peony, Black Snakeroot, Snow-in-Summer, Yarrow
Care: Best time to propagate is in spring (fibrous root system).  Fertilize with Plant-tone, Holly-tone Miracle Gro or Osmocote.

Description:  A tremendous improvement over ‘Husker Red’ with much darker foliage that emerges wine purple and keeps its color much better through the summer heat. It grows a bit taller and produces masses of pink, rather than white, flowers in early to midsummer.

Penstemon 'Grape Taffy'

Description:  Glossy green foliage in whorls topped by flower spikes opening over several weeks to 10 inches. The purple lip frames a pure white throat for vibrant contrast. New spikes continue to grow from the base providing a two month bloom time with deadheading.  Tender perennial.

Description:  The Red Riding Hood's varieties have good basal branching and thick glossy leaves, their bell shaped flowers cover the
slender stems, superb garden and container performance.  Hummingbirds love these flowers. Does not tolerate wet soils, especially in winter.

Penstemon 'Sweet Joanne'

Description:  This new Penstemon from Blooms of Bressingham® graces the garden in early summer with its delicate blossoms.  Deep pink buds open to bright lavender pink, tubular flowers with white throats and magenta veining inside.  The flowers are held on upright stems which hold the flowers high for passing hummingbirds.  If cut back after blooming, this variety may rebloom in fall.  This plant has attractive glossy, green, lance-shaped leaves and forms a dense clump.  During the heat of the summer when other perennials languished in our trial gardens, 'Sweet Joanne' continued to look as pretty as ever.
