Description:

Violas, or Pansies, do best in cool climates and grow best in partial shade and moist, rich organic soil.  After this plant blooms, dead-head or sheer back to promote a re-bloom.  In fall, you may want to cut the plant back to it's basal foliage and it will come back more full the next year.

Botanical Name: Viola
Type: Perennial
Soil Preference: Viola will grow in moist soils but prefers a well-drained, loamy or sandy soil with a pH of neutral to slightly alkaline.
Light Requirements: Full sun, partial sun, partial shade

 

Attributes: Great for naturalizing, early bloom
Pests: Slugs, snails, aphids, red spider mites
Diseases: Bacterial leaf spot, rots, downy mildew and powdery mildew, anthracnose, stem canker, gray mold, aster yellow, smut,
Good Companion Plants: Astilbe, Basket-of-Gold, Bleeding Heart, Bugleweed, Cardinal Flower, Columbine, False Rock Cress, Foamy Bells, Hosta, Siberian Iris, Ligularia, Lungwort, Moneywort, Toad Lily
Care: Divide plant to propagate in early spring or fall.  Cuttings can be taken in the summer.  Wire cages may be needed if rabbits are a problem in your area.  You can also spray with hot pepper wax to deter critters.  Fertilize with Plant-tone as recommended.  Lightly sheer after bloom and it will bloom again. In the spring cut back the dead foliage only.

Description:  True to their name, these delicate-looking flowers are as pretty as "painted porcelain". The large, creamy white blossoms have upper petals which are infused with lavender-purple and deeper purple markings in the center. It blooms the heaviest from late spring to midsummer and often re-blooms again in fall.

Description: Not your grandmother's violet, 'Purple Showers' is a fantastic clump-forming cultivar with large, 2 inch long, slightly fragrant flowers that are electric purple. They create a dramatic color impact in the garden, especially when combined with yellows and reds. Though this variety blooms the heaviest from late spring to early summer, it will continue to send up flowers sporadically throughout the summer.

Description: Whirls and swirls of sweetly scented flowers are creamy white with flecks of deep violet around the edges.  'Rebecca' belongs to a group called 'Violettas' which sports not only a compact habit but also a delightful vanilla fragrance.
