Description:

A great flowering plant to use as a hedge or in mass plantings.   The early spring color is excellent for mixed borders and cutting gardens.  Plants bloom on old growth so trim to shape after flowering. void heavy pruning. Promptly remove root suckers to control possible spread.

Botanical Name: Chaenomeles
Type: Deciduous shrub
Growth Rate: --
Soil Preference: Extremely drought tolerant once established, these early spring charmers are excellent landscape plants.
Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade; best flowering in full sun
Attributes: Hedge, screen, barrier. Specimen or group in shrub border or cottage garden. Branches may be clipped and forced for winter bloom.  Edible fruits.
Pests: Aphids, scale, mites
Diseases: Fireblight, scab, chlorosis
Care: Fertilize with Holly-tone according to the directions.

Description:  Noted for its bright red flowers and compact shape.. Single watermelon red flowers bloom before the leaves fully unfold in an early spring bloom. Flowers are followed by hard, yellowish-green fruits  that may acquire red tinges as they mature in autumn. Edible fruits. Glossy dark green leaves. No fall color.
