Description:
Ornamental Elderberries can be grown either as a shrub or cut back each year as a bold perennial.  Great in groupings and masses, perennial and shrub borders, as a specimen or screen, on roadsides or for naturalizing, good in boggy or wet gardens.

Common Name: Ornamental Elderberry
Botanical Name: Sambucus
Type: Deciduous Shrub
Soil Preference: Best in moist soil although will tolerate dry soils. Thrives under acid or alkaline soils.  Like high moisture.
Light Requirements: Full Sun to Partial Shade
Attributes: Foliage color; red or black berries attracts birds; edible fruits

Diseases:  
Care: Fertilize with Plant-tone approximately April 1st, May 20th, July 4th, August 15th & October 30th.  Keep granular fertilizers off foliage and away from stems and trunks.  Use 1/2 the recommended rate of fertilizer for new plantings.

Description:  Creamy yellow clusters of bloom in May are followed by red fruit. Foliage is finely cut, golden yellow. Generally grown and pruned for foliar growth rather than for fruiting.  Attracts birds and butterflies.

Sambucus nigra 'Black Beauty'
Black Beauty Elderberry

Description:  Intense purple-black foliage provides season long interest and color!  The unique, massive pink flowers cover the plant in mid-summer and emit a light lemon fragrance.  Dark purple berries in late summer attract songbirds and can be used to make wine. It's colorful, versatile and easy to grow.  Grow it as a shrub, or cut it back each year and use it as a bold perennial.

Sambucus nigra 'Black Lace'
Black Lace Ornamental Elderberry

Description:  Showy deeply-cut leaves (similar to a Japanese Maple) are charcoal colored PLUS you get large clusters of creamy pink flowers and vibrant fall berries.  The berries attract songbirds!  BLACK LACE™ is very cold hardy and easy to grow, and adaptable to most sites. Full sun is needed for the best color. It can be used as a dramatic accent plant, planted en masse for a trouble free high hedge, or incorporated into the mixed or perennial border. Left alone it will reach up to 8 feet in height, but BLACK LACE™ can also be pruned back each year to fit into more formal settings.

Description:  A sturdy, columnar form with new foliage emerging celery green and dark-ening to almost black. Two-tone, flat-topped pink blooms all summer long.  Foliage is nearly serrated. Black berries, beloved by birds, develop by fall.

Description:  It's a colorful, shaggy mound of gold threads with colorful reddish new growth. The foliage is more deeply cut than 'Sutherland Gold' or ‘Black Lace’ resulting in a compact irregular mound with extremely fine texture. White spring flowers produce red fruit in fall.

Description:  This choice specimen livens up the garden all season long with its stunning leaves of green splashed with gold.  It bears flattened, creamy white flowers that mature into glossy black fruit.  It grows more slowly than most elderberries.  It makes an attractive specimen.
