Description:

One of our favorite shrubs for the landscape!  Viburnums are so versatile, offering fragrant white blooms in spring, lush dark green foliage all summer, bright fall color and brilliant dark berries. Viburnum grows well in a shaded or partially shaded location, showing great fall color

Botanical Name: Viburnum
Type: Deciduous Shrub
Soil Preference: Depends on variety, see individual descriptions
Light Requirements: Full Sun, Partial Shade
Attributes: Good as a screen, in masses or as a specimen.  Most attract birds and butterflies for their shelter and fruits.
Pests: None serious, may be attacked by beetle or aphid
Diseases: Bacterial leaf spot, crown gall, shoot blight, leaf spots, powdery mildew
Care:

Fertilize with Holly-tone as recommended.

Description: Introduced at the Royal Horticultural show in London in 1940 but did not appear on the market until 1964 because of the war with Germany.  Foliage is dark green with a slight luster in summer changing to reddish-purple in fall.  The extremely fragrant flowers are pink in bud, finally white, late April to early May.  Blooms a little later than other Viburnums.  Likes moist, acidic soils.

Description: This compact beauty has loads of white spring flowers and an impressive display of rich blue berries that are eaten by birds.  In fall, the dark green foliage turns shades of red and purple-red.   Plants serve as butterfly nectar sources and as hosts for butterfly larvae.  Tolerates wetness, prefers well-drained soil with a pH of acidic.

Description: Tons of creamy white flowers cover this well branched, rounded plant.  Makes a great low hedge or foundation plant.  Attracts songbirds. CARDINAL CANDY™ has improved hardiness compared to other dilatatum varieties, so northern gardeners can finally enjoy the impressive fruit of this viburnum. Bright red, remarkable and abundant berries make for a stunning display in the fall. Fruiting appears to be strong even without another pollinator in the area.

Description:  A Chicagoland Grows, Inc. introduction selected for it's upright habit and glossy dark green foliage.  Large, snowy white, globe-shaped flowers start in spring and remain through June.  Burgundy to reddish-purple fall color.  Shiny, blue-black fruits appear in late summer.  Prefers acidic, moist soils. Plants serve as butterfly nectar sources and as hosts for butterfly larvae.

Viburnum nudum 'Winterthur'
Possom Haw, Swamp Haw Viburnum

Description: Creamy white flowers in May, red fruit and wine-red fall color make this plant very attractive all season long.  It likes moist, acid soil and will do very well in a wet site. Fall color is best when planted in full sun. Another Viburnum nudum is needed for cross-pollination if the attractive fruits are to develop. They appear in clusters and will change from pink to dark blue.  Received the Gold Medal Award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.

Description: A Viburnum with horizontal habit and ball-shaped white flower clusters in May.  Looks like a Dogwood while in bloom.  The leaves may turn reddish-purple in fall.  Red berries in late summer attracts birds.  Older plants can be cut nearly to the ground to rejuvenate growth. Plants serve as butterfly nectar sources and as hosts for butterfly larvae.   Prefers sun to partial shade in any moist soil.

Description: Ball-shaped clusters of white flowers in May.  The plants even look great in summer after flowers drop due to the beautiful green leaves. Foliage takes on a dark maroon color in September and October. Habit is extremely dense and mounded. Grows well in sun to partial shade and any moist soil.

Description: Semi-rounded white flowers that look like balls of popcorn.  A David Leach introduction.  Purple-red to dark maroon fall color. Blackish red fruits.  Grows well in sun to partial shade and any moist soil.

Description: Shasta was chosen as a 1991 Gold Medal Plant by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for being a plant of exceptional merit, but underused in landscaping.  Broad, horizontally branched shrub with sterile, marginal pure white flowers in spring.  Green foliage takes on a dark maroon color in fall. Grows well in sun to partial shade and rich moist soil.
